Some Carving Forms...

1 of 3

These pieces were given to me by a local turner who thought they were not worth finishing because they warped during drying, and had some cracks.

I repaired all the damages, then added some enhancements.

This is my "Bird".  It is a gourd that measures almost 36" in height.  I have been studying this gourd for a long time, and finally found inspiration.  I pierced the wings and painted them in many colors, and painted the inside black for contrast.

Close-up showing the painted piercing and the feet, which are painted with the same colors. The base was necessary because the gourd itself has almost no weight and was unstable. I cored out the base inside the body and poured lead for weight.

Another close-up of the lower part of the bird.
